While browsing What The Trend today I noticed an interesting set of trends happening: (Circle K, #jokoanwar, Pics Will Be Up Soon, It’s Happening Right) and several others.  Within a couple of minutes you start to learn the story of Joko Anwar, the Indonesian movie director/producer/scriptwriter who made a simple little promise to his twitter followers that he would go naked in a Circle K if he reached over 3,000 followers by the end of that day.

He had no idea how quickly this would happen (or did he?).

Within just a couple of hours he reached over 3,000 followers and it didn’t stop there!  As of this writing he has over 16,000 followers and more are being added by the minute.  How did this happen?  Is there that much power in being a trending topic?

When we look at what Joko did, he created a buzz around something fun and silly, but leveraged the fact that people wanted to see it.  This is nothing new as popular shows like Jackass and Man vs Wild, along with countless others have been doing this for years, but he simply leveraged Twitter to create his fan base.  Everyone is looking for ways to generate more followers and exposure on Twitter these days.  Rather than always trying to use automation and services to boost your followers, why not try some real authentic creative ideas to massively grow your twitter followers in literally hours.

You don’t have to stand naked in a Circle K to get popular!

Instead how about holding a creative contest or giveaway, or cool dare?  Perhaps you can battle a twitter friend and create a fun challenge to see who can hit a certain milestone first.  There are many unique ways to build a following, so hopefully this case study just gives you an example of what is possible.  I’ll bet if we check back in later today and tomorrow that his follower count will still be rapidly growing.
