Simply amazing and very useful information. I am an avid facebook user and I post on it daily, I began to post imspirational messages as my status update and one day I couldn't get on the computer to post which sparked a chain of emails to my inbox asking what was wrong. I had at least 10-15 people wondering what happened and they informed me that they look forward to my post daily. So now I make it my business to post everyday and send out birthday wishes as they come. I try to personalize every message when responding to a comment. I don't like blanket statements like "thanks everyone for the warm wishes." I want my followers to feel they are special and that I took the time to read their comments, so I thank everyone individually. I am now up to almost 900 FB friends and most of them comment on my status daily. I try to make sure I post something that someone can use to get them thru their day. Now that I have read your article, I am working on how I will incorporate your tips in my post. How to go from my inpirational messages to a plug for my business. Any further suggestions to help with this will be greatly appreciated, but if not, you have given me some valuable nuggets to use already.

I have to agree with Chris on Colin raising a few points....however....

I'm an old schooler that has realized that having data so readily available in the form of facebook is much more worth than "tweeting" stuff all day long. What I have found is that starting a conversation with someone on twitter can be a looong process. No interactivity, just a lot of stuff from someone trying to keep everyone's attention. This in my world is called "Noise". I don't need it...I am on Twitter too and agree that it is a good place to communicate, but I cannot agree that that is where your communication should begin. Ever try talking on the Floor of the New York Stock exchange when its trading time...not pretty; and you can't really be heard unless you're the one shouting the best deal consistently. Even then so, if the jerk next to you is louder, no one will hear you.

My point is, as Chris mentioned there is a lot more info to go on, easier to research who you are targeting as a marketer or business person, and actually engaging them as a new acquaintance and then friend until they are a raving fan. Then they will find you a client. (Viral effect) You have the power of selection. You're not at a barbeque where you have to shake everyone's hand, just the ones you really want to.

Last point, I have found that it is much easier to connect with people on facebook versus Twitter. No matter what I have tried to do even somewhat consistently in tweeting value, my blog gets most of its readers from facebook and referrals from outside sources. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...

The Social Media Funnel uses a number of tools to get traffic to a website; traditional and non traditional. I'm from the old school traditional where PPC reigns. That's one tool then came social media, and although facebook may have begun as the place to be with "personally met" friends, it has evolved into something quite different, so if we spoiled the Koolaid, our apologies, but we business and entrepreneurial types tend to figure things out and then make em work for us. (Capitalist pigs I know)

Once the blog shows the house, we then set them into the sales process. (notice I said process not funnel. This would denote more screening and filtering) The best part about Social Media and facebook in particular is you can get your prospect so focused that by the time they're in your funnel for sales it's more of a process to just get them going. I love that part. I can't see that really happening that fast or with a great conversion rate with Twitter...again, I could be wrong....this just seems to be the norm for me and a bunch of other Entrepreneurial types like myself.

Again, this is not meant to insult (even though it may be written that way) or create hard feelings, but I don't see the proof that twitter is where it's at. Not yet anyway.

Colin,

You raise some good points here, but I am not sure that you read through my entire value. I talk about creating as much value as you can for your followers in a professional way.

I don't see how adding targeted friends with similar interests will lower your viral potential or how it drives away the centers of influence. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on this if you get a chance to respond.

There has been a debate for quite some time on whether or not to use Twitter to begin the engagement process, or Facebook or YouTube or any other social network. Personally the reason I prefer Facebook is because you can gather much more background information on the people that you are connecting with. Twitter allows a much easier flow of communication back and forth, but doesn't give me the info needed to truly connect with people. I do use Twitter, and have several thousand followers, but I have used the Facebook strategies mentioned in this article to create online relationships that have turned into offline results and created hundreds of thousands of dollars in income.

I would love to hear feedback from any other readers on this comment. Do you agree with Colin? What are your thoughts. All comments, negative or positive are welcome here...

Out of all the blog posts that I've read in 2010 this post has probably proven to provide the most value to it's readers. This post was extremely specific and detailed oriented. I appreciate it whenever someone posts content that is straight to the post like this. I was on track to hit 5,000 friends in 90 days but feel out of the daily routine when I started having computer issues. I'll be implementing some of these strategies to go ahead and get up to 5,000 soon!
